Cumberland Pediatrics specializes in the care of your children from newborns through
adolescence. Well Child exams focus on the health maintenance, safety and disease prevention
specific to your child's age. We generally recommend the following schedule:
• 1 week of age (after discharge)
• 1 month of age
• 2 months of age
• 4 months of age
• 6 months of age
• 9 months
of age
• 12 months of age
• 15 months of age
• 18 months of age
• 2 years of age
• After 2 years, once a
year
• After 5 years, once every two years
During these checks, measurements are taken to monitor your child's growth and development and vaccines are often given to prevent future illness.
The following website is also available through Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. It features wellness tips and so much more in English and in Spanish.
Another great website with helpful information for children as well as their parents is a site called "Kid's Health". They have specific links for parents, kids and adolescents to learn more
about health and wellness.
All of these links (and many more!) can be found under our "Links" heading at the top of every page.
Obesity - A Childhood Epidemic
Did you know????
- 1 out of 3 kids in the United States is now considered overweight or obese.
- Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years!!!
What does this mean?
- Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
- Children and adolescents who are obese are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea and social/psychological problems such as poor self-esteem.
- Obese youth are more likely than youth of normal weight to become overweight or obese adults. Obesity increases the risk of many health problems including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer and osteoarthritis.
We are happy to announce the launch of our Weight and Nutrition Program. This is a program we have designed to assist our families to reach health and wellness goals, especially if your child is overweight or obese. It is important that we work as a team (your healthcare provider and the entire family) to aid in becoming a healthier community. If interested, ask you healthcare provider about more information on the program. Please print the Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-History Form. This form will need to be completed at the start of the program. Please bring the completed form with you and your child at your scheduled visit with your provider. When scheduling your visit please let the scheduler know you are scheduling your first appointment for the Weight and Nutrition program. Choice for Kids
Let's Move
Here are some tips to help you get started with making healthy choices
- Keep healthy snack available and ready to eat. Examples include dried fruits, cantaloupe, pineapples, strawberries, apples and mixed nuts (if your child is over age 2 and not allergic).
- Your child will not eat unhealthy foods if it isn’t readily available to them. GET ALL OF THE JUNK FOOD OUT OF YOUR HOUSE.
- Include the ENTIRE family when making these changes. It will promote a healthy lifestyle for everyone involved and prevent your child from feeling ‘singled out’.
- Team sports or PE in school is not an adequate amount of exercise for your child. Your child needs to play outside, walk or ride a bike. Exercise does not include exercising their thumbs playing video games or using their buttock muscles at the computer.
- Be mindful of not exposing your child to songs that have bad language and talk about sex, drugs and violence. Exposure to music that contains a positive message will also help contribute to your child’s physical well being.
Fluoride Varnish
We are now offering a fluoride varnish for our patients. This varnish can be easily applied in our office during your visit for patients aged 1 year old to 3 years old. THIS DOES NOT SUBSTITUE FOR ANY DENTAL CLEANINGS OR VISITS YOU CHILD REQUIRES EVERY 6 MONTHS. Your insurance should cover the charges for the application of the varnish. For those with no dental coverage there is a $20 fee for the application which MUST be paid at the time of service.
Dietary Supplements
We are now offering our patients fruit and vegetable supplements from Juice Plus. These supplements are a natural blend of fruit and vegetable juices, along with whole grains, in a chewable gummie. WE WANT TO STRESS TO OUR FAMILIES NUTRIENTS SHOULD BE OBTAINED PRIMARILY BY A HEALTHY VARIETY OF FOODS, NOT VITAMINS OR SUPPLEMENTS. THESE SUPPLEMENTS DO NOT REPLACE EATING FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. Please ask your healthcare provider for more information.
